Personal Opinion about Alwin Nikolais
A choreographer is ultimately defined by the choices they make aesthetically and the way that they define dance. By emphasizing emotionality, abstraction, theatricality, reality, or pedestrianism Nikolais conveyed an individual message through very different means when compared with other choreographers. Nikolais's focus on decentralization set him apart by producing works which conveyed their message abstractly, instead of overtly relaying the meaning. This was controversial at the time and I believe that Nikolais was the forerunner for future modern dance and helped prepare the audience and dance world into Merce Cunningham's theories of no intent and chance operations. This man was thinking ahead of his time.

I really appreciate Nikolais because of how he broke free of norms and used abstract concepts in his work. I really appreciate when artists convey meaning indirectly, through abstract forms because it makes the viewer think more and be more creative when forming conclusions.
ReplyDeleteI also appreciate Nikolais,because he is genius of dance.He is good at breaking old style to create new style.Some of his ideas are really strange in that age,but today we can find they are the evidences about his creativity.
ReplyDeleteNikolais liked to use abstract performance to express the meanings of dance. Although he didn't express the meaning directly, he provided a huge space for audiences to think about his work. I like his work because it is different from others.

ReplyDeleteso I find this artists have a more comprehensive understanding. In particular, he emphasized by Alwin is a feeling, abstract, drama to convey ideas, I think this is very specific.
The authors suggest that he thought of dance presented by focusing Alwin first theater, in particular his mantra decentralization release central ego on hold, so that the body and focus the mind and the sports center, the freedom to switch to any point around the body or space. "this makes me think the artist dancing by special insights.
